FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is decision steering?

Decision steering is a form of prompt injection aimed at decision models and LLM judges. A sentence inside the content under review makes a claim about the decision itself, such as an approval that was supposedly granted, a policy or an earlier verdict. The model takes the claim at face value even though it comes from whoever wrote the content.

How do I protect a decision model from prompt injection?

Keep trusted context apart from untrusted text, and never let the untrusted text decide its own verdict. The Decision Steering Gate does this by erasing single pieces of the untrusted text, asking the model again and picking the more cautious answer by a fixed rule. Critical actions still need their own permission check.

Does the Decision Steering Gate work with Jev?

The gate works with any model that returns a probability for each of a set of answers, which includes Jev-like models. We tested it with Clef, drex, Lux, pplx-decider, Julia-1 and GLiNER2.5-Decide. We have not tested it with Jev itself.

Does the Decision Steering Gate need a GPU?

No. The claim detector has 141 million parameters and takes about 23 milliseconds per piece of text on an Apple M4 CPU. On top of that comes one extra call to your decision model for every piece the gate erases.

Does the gate cost accuracy?

Little. On cases without an attack, accuracy fell by at most 6 percentage points in 28 of 30 model-task combinations. For ticket routing, the claim detector keeps harmless tickets out of the fallback queue.

Is the Decision Steering Gate open source?

Yes. The gate, the claim detector, example code and all results are on Hugging Face under the MIT licence at patronus-studio/decision-steering-gate.
